About the Undergraduate Program
METU Department of International Relations offers a wide range of compulsory and elective courses on theories of international relations, international politics, international political economy, world history and international law, which are regarded as major fields of International Relations and on subjects such as international security, international organizations, Turkish foreign policy, American foreign policy, German foreign policy, British foreign policy, non-state actors, foreign policy analysis, research methods, European Union institutions and law, Middle East politics, Balkan politics, Eurasian studies and peace and conflict studies. Apart from the departmental courses, students can take various elective courses from other departments. The department encourages students to take courses that align with their interests and to select subjects in which they wish to specialize. Owing to the elective language courses offered in METU, many of our students gain proficiency in a second foreign language by the time they graduate.
Our department, which was chosen as a pilot department when the Erasmus Programme was started in Turkey in 2005, has been one of the departments whose students have the most benefitted from this scheme. Apart from the Erasmus Programme, our students can also spend one or two semesters at prestigious universities abroad with which our university has exchange agreements. For their future professional development, the department supports students to undertake internships in different fields in the private and public sectors. Those students who fulfil the necessary academic requirements, can also do a minor or double major degrees in other departments at METU.
