Course Content

1.Geography and euro-atlantic position of Portugal. 2. History of Portugal and the Portuguese Empire: i)ancient roots and founding of Portugal, ii) maritime expansion and the Age of Discoveries -North Africa, Atlantic Islands, African coast, sea route to India and the Empire in the East, discovery and formation of Brazil, Portuguese empire in Africa, flux and reflux of people, commodities and ideas, iii)decline and the end of the Old Regime, iv) Portugal in the 20th Century-the Three Republics, Portugal and WW I, WW II, and Cold War, the end of the Colonial Empire and the Transition to Democracy. 3. Political, economic, cultural and social aspects of Portugal at present. Figures and Portuguese personalities. 4. The Portuguese strategic triangle and the extent of continental shelf. 5. Foreign policy of Portugal-Europe, Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Lusophonie: i) Portugal and NATO, ii) Portugal in the EU, iii) the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Contries (CPLP), iv)Portugal in the United Nations and the other international and regional organizations, v) Portugal and the Mediterranean Basin and relations with Turkey.
